Vision Insurance can save you a lot of money. Here are some common questions:

People often have various questions and concerns related to their vision insurance. Some common questions include:

  • What does my vision insurance cover?

Usually vision insurance covers the eye exam or requires a small co-pay. For frames, they usually have free frames from the insurance company or provide an allowance that you can get from the store. Lens options are either a co-pay or a percentage off the retail price. Insurances typically do not cover contact lens exam and the fitting fee associated with it.

  • How often can I get an eye exam?

Most vision insurance covers an eye exam on a yearly basis. Some are once every two years.

  • Are there any out-of-pocket costs for eye exams or eyewear?

If you want the frame from the insurance company, then it’s completely free. These frames though, are very standard, economical and just do the job of helping you see. They are not designer brand names and come with the standard lens. They also take around 2-3 weeks to complete.

You can also choose a frame within your vision insurance allowance. If you want better frames or lens upgrades, there is usually a co-pay that you need to pay out of pocket.

  • Does my insurance cover both eyeglasses and contact lenses?

Most insurance cover only the eye exam for eye glasses. Because contact lens may require multiple follow-up appointments, insurances typically do not cover it and the optical may charge a fitting fee for it.

  • Can I use my vision insurance for prescription sunglasses?

Sunglasses with prescription lenses may be a desirable option for those with specific vision needs. Vision insurance typically do cover prescription sunglasses.

  • What happens if I need additional eye treatments or therapies beyond routine exams and eyewear?
